REMOTE STARTER INSTALLATION

Remote vehicle starters provide the utmost convenience and are especially ideal for those who live in colder climates. The vehicle is able to start on command, by the press of a button on a remote that sends a signal to the vehicle, allowing the vehicle time to run before it is driven. In frigid temperatures, a vehicle must be started and run for a period of time before it is advisable to drive. This makes remote starters a popular choice for convenience and safety.

Because the installation process requires electrical wiring, professional installation is the only way to guarantee no damage is done to the vehicle. A knowledge of wiring diagrams as well as wire splicing is necessary to correctly install the remote starter. If the installation is done improperly, a variety of potentially irreparable electrical issues can ensue.

Vehicles with anti-theft systems offer even more problems during remote car starter installation. Additional parts may need to be purchased in order to properly install the remote starter without compromising the anti-theft system or other wiring in the vehicle. At-home kits sometimes include these modules or are compatible, depending on the type of anti-theft system.

Before anything is done to the vehicle, the battery should be disconnected, especially while the wires are being soldered. It must be connected following the installation in order to test the wires with the circuit tester. The panel beneath the steering wheel must be removed to access the necessary wires which will then be stripped and soldered to the corresponding wires of the remote car starter. Soldering is recommended after the wires are twisted together, followed by electrical tape to ensure a tighter seal. There are several wires that must be located within the steering column and possibly the door panel that must be properly connected to ensure the other electrical functions of the vehicle will maintain their correct function.

Vehicles with manual transmission are more difficult to wire when installing a remote car starter. The transmission requires even more specific wiring and electrical knowledge than an automatic and is best left to a professional.
